STOP the Violence in Pontiac Michigan!!!

Currently there is no Pontiac Police Department.  The Sheriff’s Department was kind enough to escort the “Stop the Violence” march on Monday, April 2.

Lettuce Begin (Stop the Violence)

The March (Stop the Violence)

Me and my people’s
South on Woodward (Stop the violence)
Intersection (Stop the violence)

The traffic got held up at a few intersections.  Most of the drivers showed support by blowing their horns, after realizing what was going on.

We have our work cut out, but here is a few good signs for Pontiac.

Everybody gathered in a (prayer) circle at the intersection of Woodward and Franklin Road as organizers spoke briefly about new hope in Pontiac.

Regular people (Stop the Violence)

PONTIAC- STAND UP!!!

Taking turns (Stop the Violence)

A few cars turned away.  We turned towards the South Side.

Headed South (Stop the Violence)

Save our youth (Stop the Violence)
Make some noise (Stop the Violence)
More Supporters (Stop the Violence)

Supporters from the sidelines.

Stop the Violence in Pontiac and Worldwide

This is not an advertisement nor boycott for the liquor stores in Pontiac.  Some believe that drugs and alcohol contribute to the violent acts taking place in our communities.  One goal here is to counter the negative energy with a more positive message.  S/O to all the youth who came out.

Save our Youth!!!

Save our Youth (Stop the Violence)

Some wore hoodies in memory of Trayvon Martin.

Hoodies (Stop the Violence)

Save our Youth (Stop the Violence)

Save our Neighborhood's (Stop the Violence)

Sign of the Times (Stop the Violence)

There’s a lot of History in this city.  I do believe that this is a new chapter.  Much love Pontiac.  New Yak City!!!

One, Two, and Three from me

Welcome to the Laborhood!!!

The Laborhood is what I call the network of artist that I work with.  Whether you make music or not, we all have our own Laborhood’s.  I’m always looking to build new fans, and family.  I normally rap alone on my albums.  Here, I like to talk about the artist that I work with because I think they are fresh. In just these first 3 mixtapes, there are over 80 features.  Some artist appear on multiple projects.  Some of these songs are 10 years old, some fresh out the booth.  It’s all timeless tho, if you ask me.  Another goal is to identify myself as an artist who works hard, is consistent, and can make music with just about anybody.  Shout out to D Will for mixing all 3 parts.  D Will produced many of the beats on my LABOR album, also located on my BandCamp page.

One Be Lo, Connecting the dots on K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H. and Pontiac, Michigan

A few words about the track list on K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H.

BORN AND RAISED IN PONTIAC intro

Pontiac is a city in Michigan located within the Detroit Metroplitan area.  The city is named after the Ottawa Chief Pontiac.

One Be Lo was born Raland Scruggs aka Rahlo on Nov 7, 1976
High School: Pontiac Northern, Class of ‘94
Affiliations: Binary Star, Decompoze, RoSpit, Kodac, Autocons, PSBL, Subterraneous Records

THE ASSEMBLY

While growing up in Pontiac, the assembly line is where my step-father, grandmother, and people throughout my community worked and supported their families.  Men and women migrated from Southern states to work in the factories.  Every year we would visit our relatives in Tennessee.  Even as a child, I noticed differences in way people lived and treated each other.  In the South, I always thought the people to be friendlier, and more hospitable.  In Michigan, the weather was colder, and that seemed  reflect on the attitude in the North.

RAHLO

Rahlo is raw and uncut. He pre-dates One Be Lo, One Man Army and Nahshid.

FREE DUMB

In some minds, “Freedom of Speech” is a right granted by an authority or government.  I believe if you have the ability to speak, then you have the right and obligation to speak your individual mind.  This is Free Dumb

PINKLON THOMAS

Born and Raised in Pontiac Mi, 1958-present
WBC Heavyweight Champion:  Aug 31, 1984- Mar 22 1986
Alias: Pink
Trainer:  Angelo Dundee

PONTIAC’S REBELLION

Pontiac was an Ottawa Chief who helped organized Indian Resistance towards the British, from 1763-1765.

HAYES JONES

Hayes Wendell Jones born in Pontiac Mi, August 4, 1938
Gold Medal winner of 110 m hurdles at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Rome

SATURDAY

“Even on my off day, Ferris/fairest tongue to ever come”.  Most people I know, study or work their nine to fives during the week, and on the weekend, they work around the house or have other things that need to be taken care of.  My mind never stops working, I’m sure I have some form of OCD.  I’m always working and I travel a lot but its never a problem because I love what I do.  It doesn’t feel like work when there’s a greater purpose.  Everyday is like a Saturday.

OAKLAND PRESS

When I was twelve or thirteen, I worked a couple months as a paperboy.   Even then, it seemed like the newspaper only focused on the negative things that happened in our community.

THE BLACKER THE BERRY

I typed this love song on my Blackberry, about my Blackberry.  We’re no longer together, it’s good thing I recorded it.

NEW YAK STATE OF MIND

A new Chapter.  A new beginning.

MY floW IN THE MIRROR

“It don’t matter if you build with bricks, sticks or straw; when New Yak shhh blow, you in the jaws of the wolf.”

K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H. album cover art
I wanted to turn the track list into a collage.  There is some extra filler on the cover, but it’s all related to Pontiac.
The Pontiac brand was introduced by General Motors in 1926.  Currently the division has been phased out and discontinued.  The Pontiac Trans Am is one of my favorite cars.
The Pontiac Silverdome is the former home of the Detroit Lions NFL team.
“Campy” Russell attended Pontiac Central High School.  He later went on to play in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and New York Knicks.
Micki King attended Pontiac Central High School.  She later moved on to win the Gold medal in the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
Pontiac Central High School and Pontiac Northern High School where I attended, both no longer exist.

Attn. Artists, Educators, Organizers, Activists, and Leaders

Language Arts Based On Reality is a conceptual project, created by Nahshid Sulaiman aka One Be Lo.  The objective is to develop idea’s, that empower individuals, teams and community.  The Labor album which goes by the same title, is merely the soundtrack to a much larger contribution.  Language Arts Based On Reality is a 90 min presentation that teaches through art how to Learn, Apply, Believe, Observe and Relax when hard labor has a meaningful purpose.

One Be Lo, Langauge Arts with 9th Graders

I am inspired by the many creative people in my life, which is why this presentation is a discussion, not a lecture.   My experience comes from traveling, visiting schools and learning centers of different kinds, participating in workshops, learning with children, elders and everybody in between.  I have crossed paths with  incredible talents and brilliant minds, from all different cultures, teaching styles and learning styles.  My experience has not only impacted me on a personal level, but has further prepped me to use my own art as a tool to spread love, truth, peace, freedom and justice.   Everyday i’m learning how to better connect with the people, animals and plants with whom I share the planet with.

Aside from making music, I also began to develop workbooks, as well as write novels and other materials that can be used in education.  I’m thankful for the artists, activists,  educators and students who have helped me to see my own art as a tool for learning and teaching.  I thank you for the inspiration.

These projects are also titled by the same acronym, coming soon:

Lo’s Adventure’s Belong on Railroads (a One Be Lo  fiction novel), and Lazy Animals Become Our Recipe’s (a One Be Lo cookbook) are examples of how concept’s and idea’s can be developed with organized labor.

In the Labor Presentation,  the 21 songs/subjects from the album provide structure for the Labor discussion and help the facilitators to navigate the course and pace of the discussion of:

–  building your craft/talent

–  developing your team/company

– building your community

I presented this discussion for the first time in February 2012 at the National Hip Hop Summit held on the campus of the University of Michigan.

One Be Lo facilitates at UofM Hip Hop Summit
